ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English is a guideline that regulates the wording and writing style used in technical publications. Originally developed for the aerospace industry, it is now widely used also outside the aviation industry, including companies in the defense, machinery, electronics, semiconductor, medical equipment, IT and hi-tech industries.
ASD Simplified Technical English is also known as Simplified English, STE, SE or simply ASD-STE100, or its previous designation AECMA Simplified English. It is the most versatile and least proprietary form of Controlled English found in the industry.
For the aerospace and defense industries, ASD-STE100 is often mandatory. This certainly applies to companies that supply OEM documentation to Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce and other major manufacturers of aircraft and defense systems.
Other industries often choose to use STE in order to prepare their documentation for global use, to improve information quality and above all to save on translation cost while improving translation quality.
Technical writers, technical authors, editors, documentation managers, quality managers, ILS managers and anyone else involved in the creation and management of technical documentation / publications can all benefit from the use of ASD-STE100.
STE is useful for writers of any background and with any level of experience. It helps teams of writers to create more consistent output and to work more efficiently.
Using STE does not require specific software. To get started and reap the benefits of ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English, you need basic knowledge of technical writing in English, a copy of the ASD-STE100 specification and a few days of practical training by an experienced trainer.
